Jacob’s Ladder Trail ascends to a height of 1,775 feet at Morey Hill, in the town of Becket. The summit is marked by a stone cairn originally placed there for the gala inauguration of the highway in September, 1910, led by Mrs. George Westinghouse. The cairn is all that is left of what was a very popular destination in its heyday. In 2010, it was the site of the scenic byway centennial celebration during which a new stone was added to the cairn and descendents of the Westinghouse family returned. Nearby are Jacob’s Well and Jacob’s Spring where, in the byway’s early days, cars stopped for water when they became overheated climbing the hills of the Jacob’s Ladder Trail.
